Hopkinsville Community College students got to hear a presentation in honor of Black History Month Tuesday afternoon and learn about the determination and discipline of those who came before.
Presenter Eric Coleman spoke on many well-known African American historical figures that shaped American history—from Rosa Parks and George Washington Carver to Barrack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr.—and says you can find strong, world shapers right here in Hopkinsville.
He says faith in God and persistence has gotten him to where he is today, but also by staying financially independent, warning against the dangers of ‘payday loans’ and amassing debt. Coleman says that while society has come a long way, there’s still improvement to be made, including addressing wage gaps.
He says that African Americans have and always will affect the world in positive ways—and that through all manner of struggles and hardships, he and others will rise to meet the challenge.
Coleman answered questions about how credit cards and interest function, credit, and other financial literacy inquiries. Black History Month events continue in the community through February, including the African American Heritage Breakfast this Saturday.
