Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles was in Elkton Tuesday morning for the inaugural Todd County Chamber of Commerce agriculture appreciation breakfast.
Commissioner Quarles talked about the impact of agriculture in Todd County, noting there are still nearly 600 farms operating in the county.
Todd leads the state in potato production, but poultry is the top ag commodity from Todd County.
He noted the changing times in farming across Kentucky and across the country, noting farmers are being asked to produce more with less land and less workers. Commissioner Quarles says that while production of tobacco is down markedly from its peak decades ago, it remains a major crop in Kentucky.
He urged farmers to tell their stories to those who may not be as familiar with agriculture and to young people who need to learn where their food comes from.
Wayne Hunt of H&R Agri-Power was the winning bidder for a country ham auction, giving $2,500 that will go to Todd County 4H and FFA.
