Counselors to be at Freedom Elementary Monday after student dies in fire

Freedom Elementary School will have extra resources and staff in the building Monday to help children and staff mourning the death of a student who was killed Saturday night in a house fire.

As previously reported, 10-year old Alvin Davidson and 87-year old Martha Anne Harris died from apparent smoke inhalation during a fire that destroyed a home at 144 North McPherson Avenue.

Freedom Elementary issued a statement saying they’ll have a crisis team in the building Monday to assist with grieving students and staff. Alvin was a third-grader at Freedom and the school administration sent their sympathy to his family.

They are also encouraging parents of grieving students to talk to their children at home and to share their own feelings. It is important to talk to children about what happened with information he or she can understand, according to the Kentucky Center for School Safety.

Autopsies are scheduled on Davidson and Harris on Monday at the Medical Examiner’s Office, according to Christian County Coroner Scott Daniel.

The Hopkinsville Fire Department says the cause of the fire is undetermined and the State Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to assist with the investigation.
