The Kentucky Historical Society intends to unveil a new state historical marker in Madisonville celebrating the oldest African American church in Hopkins County.
According to a news release, the Zion Temple A.M.E. Zion Church was established in a log schoolhouse that Hubbard Lunsford, an abolitionist, gave to the congregation in 1868. In 1905, the congregation began constructing a two-story brick building on North Church Street. A year later, the building was named Zion Temple.
The marker unveiling will take place at 1:00 p.m. at 205 North Church Street in Madisonville on Saturday.
Governor Andy Beshear says, βIn communities across the Commonwealth, there is an immense amount of history. The historical marker in Madisonville is an extraordinary way to commemorate the history of this community and ensure that future generations understand the significance that past generations have made in their local community.β
