Legislators pushing for REAL ID office in Christian County

Expanded gambling and the REAL ID have been in the news recently and local lawmakers share their thoughts on those issues during our weekly Legislative Update program set to air Sunday morning.

Governor Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Jim Gray have announced the regional offices where Kentuckians will be able to obtain their REAL ID that will become necessary in October to get on military posts or to fly on a commercial airline.

Representative Walker Thomas says he and other local lawmakers are asking the administration to locate a hub in Christian County, noting Fort Campbell’s location.

Paducah is currently the only location in western Kentucky where one can get a REAL ID.

Meanwhile, public personalities such as Michael Waltrip and Matt Jones have publicly voiced their support of legalized sports betting in Kentucky and Senator Whitney Westerfield says it’s created an uptick in the number of folks contacting him.

Westerfield says he won’t support expanding gambling in any form and believes the current legislation has multiple issues.

News of a bill that would increase the sales tax made the rounds on social media this week, but Representative Thomas says it’s been withdrawn.
