Voter ID bill heading to House

Legislation that would require Kentuckians to have a photo identification to vote made it out of the Senate this week and now heads to the House.

Senate Bill 2 was approved on a 29-9 vote Thursday and Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County was among those voting in favor.

Secretary of State Michael Adams has acknowledged there are no recently reported cases of fraud in Kentucky where someone was attempting to vote as someone else, but Westerfield says that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened.

Representative Myron Dossett says he’ll have to look the bill over, but he’s inclined to support the measure.

If a voter does not have a photo ID, the voter would be able to show another form of ID and affirm, under the penalty of perjury, that they are qualified to vote. Other acceptable IDs would include Social Security cards and credit cards.
