Kentucky freshman Khalil Whitney announced today he is leaving the program. In a statement on social media, Whitney said his time at Kentucky had not gone as he hoped and made what he called a “difficult decision” to leave the Wildcats. Coach John Calipari also issued a statement saying he understands the decision and will support him.
The Roselle, NJ native started the first seven games of the season, but his role has steadily diminished. He has scored just three points in SEC play and played just four minutes total over Kentucky’s last two games. He will end his Wildcat career averaging 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds. ESPN reports Whitney may look to transfer to either Illinois or Georgetown or possibly turn pro.
