Republican U.S. Senator Rand Paul of Bowling Green says he’ll oppose any requests for witnesses to testify in the impeachment trial of President Trump.
Speaking with WHOP News Thursday, Senator Paul called the impeachment an “abuse of power” by House Democrats—particularly House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Shiff.
Paul says any subpoena of the President’s advisors to testify as witnesses in the trial would likely be challenged in court and that process could last months.
He says for that reason and others, he will push for Senate Republicans to end the trial as quickly as possible with no witness testimony.
The senator doesn’t believe President Trump said or did anything illegal or inappropriate during his telephone conversation with the Ukrainian president, asserting his belief that the President had the authority to withhold aid if he suspected corruption in the Ukrainian government.
Senator Paul believes the impeachment proceedings and trial will only increase the partisan divide in Washington.
President Trump again called the entire impeachment process a ‘witch hunt’ during a series of tweets Thursday morning.
