Any version of a biennial budget approved by the Kentucky General Assembly this session is likely to have fewer major projects than spending plans of the past due to lack of expendable revenue and rising obligations to the pension systems.
State Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke says one item at the top of his wish list is funding work to bring two interchanges on the Pennyrile Parkway up to interstate standards to finish the Interstate 169 designation.
Representative Walker Thomas says funding construction of the I-69 bridge over the Ohio River between Henderson and Evansville is also a big transportation priority that will affect the entire region.
Some lawmakers see sports betting and other expanded gambling options as ways to raise additional revenue to fund pensions and projects, but Thomas says he and many constituents he’s heard from oppose the gambling bill that may come up for a vote next week.
Fourth District state Representative Lynn Bechler of Marion also represents a portion of Christian County and believes any new revenue from expanded gambling won’t be enough to address major budgeting challenges Kentucky faces.
