Focus 21st Century Minority Leadership and Hopkinsville Community College got the ball rolling Saturday for local celebrations honoring Martin Luther King Jr.
The new event, which focused on youth participation and “What Freedom Means to Me”, took place in the HCC auditorium and included artwork by local students and performances. Tyquez Douglas read the famous, “I Have a Dream Speech” by Dr. King and Christian County High School performed several songs, all too rousing applause.
HCC President Dr. Alissa Young was the keynote speaker and reminded the large audience in attendance that freedom does not come without sacrifice, and it can look different to everyone.
She encouraged everyone to stand together, to never forget the progress that has happened to achieve freedom, and strive towards a bright future.
Awards were presented to the winners of art and essay contests from across the school district. The annual NAACP MLK March starts at 9:30 a.m. Monday morning at the Boys and Girls Club and then makes its way over to First Street Baptist Church for the service, as services continue to honor the man who would forever change the world.
