Senior Center moving lunch, other activities to old CCMS building

The PACS Christian County Senior Center will open at its alternate site on Tuesday of next week after its building on West Seventh Street was damaged Saturday morning by severe weather.

Rachel Newman is the Director of Aging Services and says they’ll be open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. weekdays at the old Christian County Middle School on Glass Avenue. They will be able to cook congregate lunch there and will again cook all of the food for Christian, Todd and Caldwell counties.

Newman notes that Meals on Wheels only missed its Christian County deliveries on Monday, despite the devastation at the local center.

They will not have exercise equipment and clients won’t be able to do their walking routine at the old middle school building, but Newman says those seniors will be able to walk at the Sportsplex between 8 a.m. and noon at no charge.

She says they will provide what services they can at their temporary home, including blood pressure checks and bingo.

There’s no timetable on when activities will move back to the center on Seventh Street, which lost a good portion of its roof in the storms. The sprinkler system put water in parts of the building where the roof wasn’t damaged.

Newman praised county officials who have helped make the recovery and transition process possible.
