Storms cause major damage across area

Severe weather caused significant damage across the region Saturday morning.

Christian County Emergency Management Director Randy Graham says the most severe damage was likely at the Christian County Senior Center on West Seventh Street.

The roof was severely damaged with portions missing in several places on the Senior Center and water was standing inside through a vast majority of the building.

Christian Fiscal Court owns the building and Judge-Executive Steve Tribble says there is signficiant damage to the infrastructure.

He says the sprinkler system contributed to the water throughout the building, even where the roof wasn’t damaged, and it could be months before normal operations resume.

Judge Tribble says says it’s possible PACS may be able to find temporary homes for at least some of its programs, but he doesn’t have a timetable or specifics yet.

There was also major damage at Ruff Park, where trees were blown onto fences and dugouts were destroyed. Lights were blown down and numerous trees were downed or damaged.

Christian County Jailer Brad Boyd was already on scene assessing the damage and said he will be offering the services of inmate crews to help get the park in good enough shape to play games in the upcoming spring season.

Judge Tribble said the county’s insurance provider is also aware of the park damage.

Graham says many homes had roof damage across the area and there were widespread power outages in the city and county.

Much of the roof was blown off the old Booker T. Washington Elementary School on Second Street and the Salvation Army office building took on significant damage.

There was minor damage to the roof at Christian County High School and several power poles were bent by the wind in front of the school. The Toyota of Hopkinsville Basketball Shootout that had been scheduled for the gym there had to be canceled.

Eleven rail cars were derailed by high winds near Casky Lane, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah.

Partial roof damage was reported to three homes along Harmony Church Road about six miles west of Cerulean in Caldwell County, in addition to a barn destroyed on KY 514 in the same area.

Large trees were blown down four miles southwest of Cadiz on along Malone Road and a tree was blown onto a truck on US 68 near Cadiz. The National Weather Service received a report of a possible rain-wrapped tornado about 7:10 a.m. just east of Cadiz.

Trigg Emergency Management Director David Bryant reported some damage to the rescue squad building and damage in the Allen Circle area west of Cadiz.

Todd County Emergency Management Director Daniel Smith had no reports of significant damage, as of mid-morning.

There were no immediate reports of injuries anywhere.
