The Cincinnati Reds signed Japanese outfielder Shogo Akiyama Monday to a three-year, 21-million dollar contract. He will be the first Japanese player in history of the Reds, who are the last major league club to add a player from that country. The 31-year-old is a .301 hitter in nine years with the Seibu Lions and is an All-Star selection the last five seasons. He will be introduced formally at a news conference tomorrow.
