City council to appoint interim mayor when Hendricks resigns

Hopkinsville City Council will soon have a choice to make on who will serve as interim mayor when Mayor Carter Hendricks resigns.

City Attorney Doug Willen explained the process to choose an interim mayor, saying council has 30 days to choose who will serve—and that person could be a current city council member or anyone the council chooses—after Hendricks’ resignation is accepted.

That person would serve as interim until someone is elected in the November general election. The person elected would then serve out the remainder of the unexpired term, which goes through the end of 2022.

In the event council fails to appoint an interim mayor by March 5, Governor Andy Beshear would then appoint someone to fill the vacancy.  Mayor Hendricks intends to resign from office on January 31, having accepted a position as the next executive director of the South West Kentucky Economic Development Council.

In action at Tuesday’s meeting, council approved on second reading approved a budget amendment that allocates $220,000 to go towards completing the Hopkinsville Fire Department Training Center project.  They also recognized local student Livi Ray, who was elected as Governor of the 2019 Kentucky Youth Assembly.
