League of Women Voters to celebrate 100 years of women’s suffrage

January 6 in Kentucky marks the 100th year since the state ratified the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote, and Hopkinsville intends to celebrate in a big way.

The celebration begins on January 6, with a proclamation read by Mayor Carter Hendricks and Christian County Judge-Executive Steve Tribble at the Christian County Courthouse.  The celebration is coordinated by the League of Women Voters and several other women groups in the community, and Bonnie Lynch says it’s all about remembering the fight that was made to gain that right—events will start in January and continue to August in 2020.

She says they are actively raising money to create the first historical marker in Hopkinsville celebrating a woman who made an impact in the community.

On January 8, a historical review of the Suffrage movement will be presented and upcoming events relating to the Suffrage Centennial Celebration will be shared at the “Midday at the Gallery”, held at 12 p.m. at the Hopkinsville Art Guild.  Lynch says they are excited to commemorate this enormous milestone in women’s history, and they hope that women across the city will join in the celebration.
