Local law enforcement lit up Hopkinsville Wednesday evening as they escorted children to Walmart as part of the 2019 Fraternal Order of Police Shop with a Cop event.
A long line of law enforcement vehicles made its way down Fort Campbell Boulevard, sirens blaring and some honking Christmas jingles. Children, who are selected through the Christian County Public Schools Resource Centers, which evaluate the need in kids who may be struggling not only financially, but emotionally in some way, were paired with an officer who helped them shop.
Longtime coordinator Lisa Gould says the event is truly touching, to watch the joy it brings the children.
She says the children weren’t shopping for themselves—they were shopping for Christmas presents for their mothers, fathers and siblings—but they won’t end the night without a surprise.
After the shopping is done, everyone goes back to the War Memorial Building for pizza and gift wrapping—and then Santa himself delivers presents to the kids. Agencies participated from all over, including the Hopkinsville Police Department, Christian County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Campbell Military Police, Trigg County law enforcement and the Christian County Jail.
