Luna chosen to be Human Rights Commission executive director

The Hopkinsville Human Rights Commission has a new executive director, after the Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to appoint Idalia Luna to the position.

Luna, who has worked with the City of Hopkinsville for six years, will step into the role being left by longtime executive director Bernard Standard, who announced his retirement recently.  Speaking with WHOP News, Luna says she’s excited, nervous and more than a little humbled to be chosen.

She has served on the board for many years, and says this will be a learning experience as she learns the daily procedures of the Commission.

Luna says she intends to be an advocate in making sure employers, public housing and others are not discriminating.

In taking this position, Luna does step down from her current role at the mayor’s assistant, and she says it’s bittersweet—she’s enjoyed working with the City of Hopkinsville team immensely, as that team is driven to work together and better Hopkinsville.

Luna becomes executive director on January 27.
