Tree lighting kicks off weekend of Christmas events

Christmas may be a couple of weeks away, but the spirit of it was alive in Hopkinsville Thursday evening for the newly restructured tree lighting ceremony downtown.

The 30 foot tall tree now calling Founder’s Square home has approximately 6,500 lights adorning its branches, and a local child got to flip the switch to light it.  Collin Crutchfield got chosen out of 20 nominees, and his mother, Amanda Crutchfield, says it is fitting because Collin is a Christmas miracle himself.

Around 150 people counted down with the Crutchfield’s, and also sang carols together beforehand.  Parks and Recreation Superintendent Tab Brockman says they wanted to make the tree lighting its own event, separate from the Christmas parade.

He says the tree lighting just kicks off a weekend full of events, including Skating on the Square, holiday events on Saturday and then Christmas parade at 5:15 p.m. Saturday.

The 90-minute sessions are $10, which includes skate rental and sessions are open to the first 80 people for Skating on the Square, which continues through Sunday.  For more information about upcoming events, contact Parks and Recreation at 270-887-4290.
