HPD: Man charged after leaving child with Walmart employee

A Hopkinsville man is facing a first-degree wanton endangerment charged after he allegedly left his 2 year old child with a Walmart employee and walked away while under the influence.

According to the Hopkinsville police report, officers were called to the Hopkinsville Walmart around 2:15 p.m. when 34-year old James Dethrow of Hopkinsville allegedly entered the business and gave the 2 year old to a Walmart employee.  A manager contacted police when over 30 minutes passed and Dethrow had still reportedly not returned for the child.

Officers made contact with Dethrow, he was allegedly confused, unsteady on his feet and behaving manifestly under the influence of unknown drugs. He reportedly thought the child was with his wife in the parking lot.

A search of Dethrow reportedly revealed 10 Xanax pills in his pants pocket, and marijuana was found in plain view in his vehicle.

He was arrested and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, public intoxication, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.
