Local students claim victory at chess tournament

Local students are celebrating their success in a chess tournament that was held at Freedom Elementary School earlier this month, which is held as part of a program through the Inner City REZ.

According to a news release, this is the seventh year for the Chess program in Christian County, which was started as part of the Economy Opportunity initiative through the Inner City REZ.  Chess has been proven to provide many benefits to children, including an increase in self-confidence, patience, logic, critical thinking, observation, pattern-recognition, analysis, creativity, and more.

It is these specific skills that transfer easily into job readiness aptitude and help future generations gain a hand up in employment.

Winners of the fall 2019 Local Scholastic Chess Tournament for the K-6 division were Jaimin Lathon in first place, Charlie Maddux and Charlie Tomberlin tying for second place and Lydia Fraley in third place.

In the tournament for the 7-12 grade division, first place went to Carter Pollard, second place was taken by James Ballard and third place was won by Julius Grace.
