There are four new inductees into the Todd County High Schools Hall of Fame.
They are Howard Gorrell, William Claude Hightower, Henry C. Malone, and Verbena Beanie Groves Miller.
Gorrell was a 1955 graduate of Elkton High School. He went on to score over 1,000 points for the Austin Peay State University basketball team and then went into education and coaching.
He later became principal at Auburn High School, was the first principal at Logan County High School and was superintendent of Todd County Schools from 1987 to 1993.
Hightower attended Claymour School and Vanderbilt Training School of Todd County.
He received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Western Kentucky State College. He then taught and became principal of Sharon Grove, Kirkmansville, and Guthrie schools. At age 31, Claude was elected superintendent of the Todd County School District. After a merge of districts, he became the first and longest tenured superintendent of the Todd County Board of Education at 35 years.
Malone attended Guthrie school for 12 years and then enlisted in the United States Navy, spending time in the Pacific theater during World War II. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Science from Austin Peay and a master’s degree from George Peabody College. He served as principal of the Guthrie school for seven years before taking over as Superintendent of Todd County Schools for seven years.
Miller graduated from Elkton High School in 1945. She attended both Transylvania University and Western Kentucky University declaring physical education as her major. Beanie also taught at Clifty Elementary School while completing her college degree. She was instrumental in organizing the Food Stamp program of Todd County. Following her retirement from the Kentucky Department of Human Resources, she served on numerous boards and organizations in Todd County.
