The ribbon was cut and man who helped shape the community was honored during a ceremony for the park bearing his name—the newly relocated Joe Mumford Park.
Community members and leaders, along with multiple members of the Mumford family gathered at the park located at the corner of Woodmill Road and East 18th Street to celebrate its opening and remember the man who it is named for. City Council member Patricia Bell says Mumford was instrumental in getting the streets paved in the Durrett Avenue community, and now family will have a safe, nice place to play.
Mumford’s oldest son, retired U.S. Navy Lt. Donald Mumford says his father was a kind man who worked hard to improve life not just for his family, but the community around him.
Retired Command Sgt. Major Johnny Butler, says the family appreciates the memorial to his father-in-law and they hope it’s a sign of good things to come in the future.
Recognitions were presented to several of the family members present, whose success include titles from Brigadier General, to multiple doctors and reverends. They were also presented with a key to the city and an invitation to always feel welcome in Hopkinsville.
The park is approximately 3.5 acres and features playground equipment, a basketball court, pavilion, restrooms and a large lawn area.
