The city becomes “HopkinsChill” for the holiday season, many events planned

The holidays are quickly approaching and the City of Hopkinsville gearing up for a big celebration with the Christmas Parade, downtown Christmas tree lighting and the return of Skatin’ on the Square.

According to a news release from Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Department, Skatin’ on the Square features a 2,500-square foot synthetic ice rink at Founders Square, giving guests the unique opportunity to ice skate in downtown Hopkinsville. Organizers will add an extra day, due to the success of the inaugural ice skating event.

The 90-minute sessions are $10, which includes skate rental and sessions are open to the first 80 people. Walk-up sales will be available, but interested participants are encouraged to register their session in advance by visiting HoptownRec.com.  The Skatin’ on the Square kicks off on December 12, which is when the annual Christmas tree lighting will take place this year, at 6 p.m. that evening.

The Hopkinsville Electric System Christmas parade will get under way Saturday, December 14 at 5:15 p.m. along with multiple events, including the playing of the Polar Express at the Alhambra Theater, a holiday open house at the Woody Winfree Fire Museum, and a visit with the Grinch at the public library happening earlier in the day.  The parade will have a Christmas Parade Golf Cart Division, and the theme is “what Christmas teaches you”.  The grand marshal is Hopkinsville Community College President and CEO Dr. Alissa Young.
