Gov. race recanvass is Thursday

Boards of election across Kentucky will convene at 9 a.m. Thursday for the recanvass of the gubernatorial election.

Governor Matt Bevin currently trails Democrat Andy Beshear by 5,189 votes and Bevin requested the recanvass the day after the election.

Christian County Clerk Mike Kem says the process will entail the Board of Elections taking another look at the tapes from each precinct and recalculating the numbers to be sure the totals submitted last week were accurate.

Recanvasses rarely yield any significant change in totals. James Comer requested one in 2015 after losing in the Republican gubernatorial primary to Bevin by only 83 votes.

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes has invited secretary-elect Michael Adams to join her in her office on Thursday for the recanvass.

She says in an email, “I have conducted over 20 recanvasses in my 8 years as Secretary of State, it’s a big and important part of the job and my hope is the 2020 Presidential Election will not be his first exposure to this process.”

The purpose of a recanvass is to verify the accuracy of the vote totals reported from the voting machines.
