Salvation Army to open extreme weather event shelter on bitter cold nights

Cold weather has arrived and the Salvation Army will again offer its extreme weather event shelter on particularly cold nights.

Hopkinsville Mayor Carter Hendricks says thanks to a partnership between the Salvation Army, city and other agencies, the soup kitchen will open as a warming shelter on nights when the temperature or wind chill is 20 degrees or below.

It takes financial contributions from the community to open the extra space on cold nights and Mayor Hendricks says the Salvation Army would appreciate any help that anyone could provide.

The extreme weather event shelter is located at 313 East Seventh Street and the nighttime hours are 7 p.m. until 7 a.m.

The 20 degrees threshold is actually up from 15 degrees last year, thanks to support from the community.

The Salvation Army Hopkinsville Facebook page posts updates on when the shelter will be open and officials there can also be reached by phone at 270-885-9633.
