Amy McGrath says Andy Beshear’s apparent victory in the governor’s race shows that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell can be beaten next year and her potential Democratic primary opponent has stepped away from his popular radio show following a complaint by state Republicans.
McGrath, who is seeking the nomination to face McConnell in 2020, issued a statement saying “This is a win for Kentuckians who want leadership that works for them and decency returned to the Office of the Governor. This election proves that Kentuckians are tired of politicians who put their party before their state and country.”
Meanwhile, the Republican Party of Kentucky filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission claiming Matt Jones received illegal contributions from his employers by being allowed to continue hosting Kentucky Sports Radio on stations across the state and that he failed to properly disclose those contributions.
Jones contends has not yet announced as a candidate for the U.S. Senate and has only formed an exploratory committee. He called the complaint nonsense and blamed McConnell’s campaign, though they claim to not care if Jones is on the radio.
Even so, Jones said he understood iHeartRadio’s decision to ask him to not be on his show that airs on WHOP weekday mornings at 9.
He says he will make a final decision on if he’s running for McConnell’s seat in the very near future.
