Gov. Bevin requests recanvass of election

Governor Matt Bevin has officially requested a recanvass of Tuesday’s election.

The Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office received the request Wednesday and a news release says county boards of election will convene on Thursday, November 14 at 9 a.m. to recheck the vote totals from their machines and absentee ballots.

Immediately upon completion of the recanvass, the counties will file their reports with the Secretary of State.

Recanvasses rarely yield any significant change in totals. James Comer requested one in 2015 after losing in the Republican gubernatorial primary to Bevin by only 83 votes.

The governor clarified his remarks on reported irregularities on Election Day during a news conference Wednesday afternoon, claiming that thousands of absentee votes had been “illegally counted” and that some people were “turned away” at precincts. He also asserts that “in Jefferson County, there were a number of machines that did not work properly.”

Bevin said all of this is to ensure that there is integrity in the process.

Bevin currently trails Andy Beshear by 5,189 votes.

The governor could still request a recount following the recanvass.
