Voting opens smoothly in General Election

Voting is underway across Kentucky in the General Election with a smooth start locally.

There was no power at Crofton Elementary School up until just before 6 a.m., but Christian County Clerk Mike Kem says the issue was rectified and they could have still had voting with the paper ballots regardless.

Kem says he has increased his voter turnout projection to 19 percent, or about 10-to-11,000 voters, due to an influx of late absentee voting. He says the nickel tax ballot question and interest in the governor’s race are likely reasons for a higher projected participation than four years ago.

Todd County Clerk Cindy O’Bryan notes voters are signing in electronically on tablets. She says a couple electronic handicapped accessible machines didn’t function when polls opened, but they are still able to accommodate everyone with the paper ballots.

Trigg County Clerk Carmen Finley says voting opened there with no issues and everything was going smoothly.

Kentuckians are voting on all state constitutional officers and western Kentucky voters will decide who will be the next Supreme Court Justice in District 1. Christian County voters will say whether or not they support the nickel tax rate increase proposed by the Christian County School Board and voters in Todd and Logan County will elect a new circuit judge.

Polls will be open until 6 p.m. and anyone standing in line at that time will be allowed to vote.
