First race is run at Oak Grove Racing and Gaming facility

The first ever harness race was run at the still under construction Oak Grove Racing and Gaming track Friday afternoon on Thompsonville Lane in that city.

Attendees to the inaugural race were able to witness the first harness race—which is where horses pull the driver behind them in a type of cart—right from the sidelines.  While there is still plenty of construction left to go, with only the track, the large stables and some parking complete, Oak Grove Mayor Teresa Jarvis says the day was very much an exciting one.  She says the track and facility will do good things for the community, not just by creating jobs, but by putting Oak Grove on the map.

She says phase one of construction is set to be completely by the summer and it presents an opportunity that the people of the city needed.

The winner of the first race was horse number six named Dee Rocks, who was driven by Jamaica Patton. An official ribbon cutting will be held when all construction is complete, but races will continue every weekend through November 10.

Once everything is finished at the facility—which is a partnership between Churchill Downs and Keeneland—along with the track, stable facilities and paddock, it will also feature 1,500 historical racing gaming machines, a 128-room hotel, a grandstand seating area, indoor event space, outdoor amphitheater and stage and an equestrian center that will include a 30 pad RV park.
