Veterans depart Hopkinsville for Honor Flight

Four local veterans departed Christian Care Communities in Hopkinsville Tuesday morning as they head to Washington, D.C. for an honor flight.

Ninety-four-year-old Elwood Richardson lives at Christian Care Communities and served in World War II with the Army. He said he’s grateful for the opportunity to go to Washington while he’s still able.

He says he’s most looking forward to going to the memorial sites in Washington and paying respect to those who paid the ultimate price for freedom.

Lela Hale with Christian Care Communities helps coordinate the trips and says the veterans will have a full schedule.

Richardson is joined by Henry Breithaupt of Hopkinsville, who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam; Jim Etheridge of Cadiz, who fought in World War II and Korea; and James Burton of Hopkinsville, who fought in Vietnam.

The bus carrying the four veterans was escorted away from the Cornell Memory Center by the Christian County Sheriff’s Department and Hopkinsville Police Department and several Hopkinsville firefighters were on hand to show their respect.
