City officials, community members and trail enthusiasts were on hand for a ground breaking Thursday afternoon for the next phase of the Greenway System in Hopkinsville.
Starting at the Pardue Lane trailhead, by the Hopkinsville Dog Park, the Greenway System will soon go down to Foston Chapel Road. The $4.6 million expansion project will create another 1.7 miles to the rail trail, including large pedestrian bridge over the intersection of Country Club and Lafayette Road.
Mayor Carter Hendricks says this project has been many years in the making and there are more phases to come in the future.
Councilmember Wendell Lynch says this project shows that when people come together, they can achieve great things.
April Cotthoff, a regular user of the trail system and who owns a home that backs up to it, says that it’s about more than fitness—the Greenway System connects the community and those who live in it.
A partnership with Hopkinsville Surface and Stormwater Utility will also allow for the area known as ‘the pit’ off of Country Club Lane to be addressed by redesigning the existing detention basin. The endeavor is also assisted through grants with the Transportation Alternatives Program and the Recreational Trails program, along with other partnerships.
