Jamal Mounts, the man recently found guilty of murder in the 2014 death of his mother and attempted murder in the assault of another woman, was sentenced to life in prison in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday.
Mounts appeared in front of Circuit Judge Andrew Self with attorneys Stephanie Mize and Eric Bearden, with Mize requesting that Mounts receive some type of mental health treatment while incarcerated.
Mounts will receive credit for time served and the life sentence does come with possibility of parole, but Mounts must serve at least 20 years before coming eligible. Bearden informed the court Mounts does intend to file for an appeal of the verdict.
After asking Mounts if he had anything to say during final sentencing—which Mounts declined—Judge Self upheld the jury’s recommendation and sentenced him to life in prison for first-degree murder, attempted murder and first-degree burglary.
Mounts beat Roxie Mounts to death in 2014, fought with his brother who attempted to interfere and then broke down the door of neighbor Marvelyn Spray’s apartment, and attempted to kill her during an assault.
