The Rotary Club of Hopkinsville got a visit from the local League of Women Voters at Tuesday’s meeting, and learned about what their mission is and what policies they support.
Gaye Haynes with the League of Women Voters says the group is all about encouraging more people to become educated about legislation and politics while getting them prepared to vote.
She says their mission is about defending democracy, and the local league has hosted numerous educational forums, meet the candidates’ events and voter registration booths.
Haynes says that despite the name, they do happily accept men into the League of Women Voters. She says they focus on voter access, fighting voter suppression and making sure redistricting for voting precincts remains fair.
Tuesday was National Voter Registration Day, and the league was out at both local high schools helping students old enough to vote to get registered. The deadline to register, and still be able to vote in state elections, is October 7. For more information, go online to govoteky.com.
