Funding for new Fort Campbell middle school diverted to border wall

Federal funding that was set aside for construction of a new Fort Campbell middle school is being re-directed to help pay for President Trump’s border wall.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper acted on the President’s order this week and signed off on reprogramming $3.6 billion in military construction funds to be used for 175 miles of border barriers, as reported by CBS News.

That included just under $63 million that was designated for construction of a new middle school on Fort Campbell.

Western Kentucky Congressman James Comer says, “Unfortunately, we have a situation where baseless opposition from the Democrats on securing funding to protect our border has prompted possible delay of some military projects. The necessary funding to strengthen our border was not provided during the appropriations process, time and again blocked by partisan politics. Nevertheless, I certainly support the Ft Campbell middle school project and look forward to its completion in the future.”

Democratic Tennessee Congressman John Cooper issued a statement critical of the action saying, “Our troops and their families deserve better. Democrats are united in our opposition; it is up to House and Senate Republicans to stand up to the President and his unprecedented overreach.”
