Christian Fiscal Court unanimously voted Tuesday morning to keep property tax rates the same, increased the pay for election poll workers and approved the purchase of land for a Christian County Jail community service program storage building.
The rate on real property will remain 18.7 cents per $100 of assessed value, if the tax ordinance is approved on final reading September 10. Judge-Executive Steve Tribble says increased assessments mean keeping the same rate will actually bring in increased revenue.
The ordinance decreases the rate on tangible property from 20 to 18.7 cents per $100 of assessed value.
Christian County Clerk Mike Kem requested a $50 pay increase for precinct workers, saying it has become increasingly difficult to recruit and retain folks willing to work about 14 hours on Election Day. He says Logan County raised their total pay to $200 and it has worked well there.
Poll workers would receive $10 for attending a training session and $190 for working the full day for the election. Anyone interested in becoming a precinct worker should call the clerk’s office at 270-887-4105.
After about a half hour in closed session, magistrates unanimously approved the purchase of six lots behind the jail on West Fourth Street, South Cleveland Avenue and South Elm Street that Jailer Brad Boyd says will allow construction of a building to house equipment used by all of their community service programs.
The inmate programs perform work for government agencies and non-profit organizations in the community. Total cost of the six lots was $187,200 and Boyd notes they are all out of the flood plain.
