Man arrested for evidence tampering following wreck

A Hopkinsville man was arrested for felony evidence tampering and other charges following a wreck with injury Saturday afternoon on North Drive.

It happened a few minutes after 1 p.m. near the West Seventh Street intersection and an arrest citation for 33-year old Brandon Watkins of Hopkinsville says he ran to doughnut store nearby and discarded a bag of marijuana before returning to the scene. Witnesses said a passenger of Watkins also fled the scene.

Watkins claimed he went to the doughnut store to dial 911, but personnel there said he just threw the bag of marijuana on a bench and then ran back out.

Police say Watkins caused the crash and that an occupant of the other vehicle was injured, with details on that accident not yet released.

Watkins was arrested for tampering with evidence, failure to maintain insurance, driving with a suspended license and possession of marijuana.
