Benton woman charged with assault, DUI in Princeton collision

The Princeton Police Department has charged a woman with assault and wanton endangerment following a rear-end collision on U.S. 62 West Wednesday.

According to a news release, the collision occurred on U.S. 62 in the area of Walmart when a vehicle driven by 37-year old Jennifer Strait of Benton rear-ended another vehicle operated by 79-year old Mary Jewell of Princeton.

Jewell’s vehicle was sent off the road and traveled approximately 600 feet before colliding with several trees. Jewell had to be extricated from the vehicle and was flown to Deaconess in Evansville for treatment of injuries.  Strait allegedly left the scene and traveled approximately another mile before the vehicle died.  She was transported to Caldwell Medical Center for treatment.

Strait has since been charged with multiple offenses in relation to the wreck including, second-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, second-offense DUI, driving on a DUI suspended license, felony leaving the scene of an accident while failing to render aid, and more traffic violations.
