One person was killed and 13 were injured in a wreck involving 12 vehicles Friday afternoon on I-24 in Lyon County.

Kentucky State Police say it happened at 4:38 p.m. as traffic was very slow or stopped near the 51 mile-marker eastbound due to construction ahead.

A tractor-trailer operated by 42-year old Coleman Strachman of North Carolina was approaching and inattention is listed as the reason he ran into the rear of traffic and set off a chain of events that collected a dozen vehicles.

A passenger in a van owned by Christ in Youth, Incorporated of Joplin, Missouri—19-year old Jace Ashton Smothers of Kansas—was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lyon County coroner.

Four people were flown to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville and one was flown to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. At least two of those victims were thought to be in critical condition.

Eight other individuals involved in the crash were transported by ambulance to local hospitals and approximately eight people declined a trip to the hospital.

Kentucky State Police shut down the eastbound lanes for several hours for accident reconstruction. Officials expected traffic to resume no later than 3 a.m.

The sheriff’s departments from Christian and Trigg counties were among law enforcement agencies assisting and ambulances came from Lyon, Trigg and Caldwell County to assist the injured.
