Barney Thweatt Day held today in Benton

A surprise “Barney Thweatt Day” was held today in Benton honoring the point guard and team captain of the 1948 Brewers State Championship team, the last undefeated boys’ state championship team in Kentucky. He is also one of the oldest living players to play basketball for Murray State University.

Mr. Thweatt went on to a successful career in coaching, including leading both Oldham County and Paducah Tilghman to the state tournament. He was then a school administrator for many years and was principal at several schools including Christian County High School. He is also a past president of the KHSAA Board of Control and is enshrined in the KHSAA Hall of Fame, the Marshall County Hall of Fame, the Christian County Hall of Fame, the Oldham County Hall of Fame and several others.
