Fiscal court votes 5-3 to allow distilleries to sell alcohol by the drink on Sundays

Distilleries in Christian County will be able to sell alcohol by the drink for five hours on Sundays if Christian Fiscal Court approves second reading of an ordinance that passed on a 5-3 vote Tuesday morning.

It’s actually an amendment to an ordinance from 2017 that allowed distilleries to sell samples of their product between 1 and 6 p.m. on Sundays. A.J. Jones of Casey Jones Distillery says weekends are busy and patrons often leave disappointed on Sundays when they can’t buy product by the drink.

The ordinance, that only applies to distilleries, passed with magistrates Rich Liebe, Terry Bowman and Mark Cansler casting the ‘no’ votes.

Squire Liebe says his thoughts haven’t changed since when he was mayor of Hopkinsville—he believes Sundays are different from the rest of the week.

Final reading of the ordinance will be on the July 9 agenda.

A $29.8 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year was approved unanimously and without any changes from first reading.

In other action, Christian County Animal Shelter Director Irene Grace says May was a record month with nearly 400 cats and dogs finding homes.

Magistrates also approved a lease agreement with Jennie Stuart Medical Center to house the county coroner’s office morgue cooler in the hospital.
