Elkton working toward beginning of alcohol sales

Elkton City Council approved an ordinance last week to begin the process of bringing in alcohol sales to the city following the recent local option election, but it will be several more weeks before those sales can begin.

Mayor Arthur Green says the first ordinance came from Kentucky Alcohol Beverage Control, which provides a sort of template to cities.

Elkton can’t begin accepting liquor license applications until 61 days have passed from the day the results were certified, so that will be late July or early August. Mayor Green says they’ve heard some interest, but it’s a wait and see to determine how many businesses will request a license.

The ordinance approved last week establishes many of the fees and taxes associated with being licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.
