Update: Two EF1 tornadoes hit Christian County Friday night

The National Weather Service has determined two tornadoes touched down during Friday evening’s severe weather in Christian County.

The first touched down about 6:30 p.m. six miles southeast of Gracey along Pierce Lane near Boyd Road. It was an EF1 with peak winds of 100 mph and it was on the ground for about nine-tenths of a mile. The twister moved east and destroyed three empty grain silos and then proceeded into a field. The weather service notes much of the damage in that area was to the south of the tornado, which was 250 yards wide at times.

A home lost about half of its roof to the south of the tornado on Pierce Lane and Christian County Emergency Management Director Randy Graham said the house was likely a total loss. The owners of the home on Pierce Lane say they were no longer living there as they are a military family moving to another base. The residence was pending sale and the contract was supposed to be signed in a matter of days.

The second tornado was also an EF1 and it touched down about 6:38 p.m. north of the intersection of Woosley Road and Striped Bridge Road. It had peak winds of 105 mph, was 175 yards wide and was on the ground for about six-tenths of a mile.

The tornado moved east-southeast and damaged between eight and 10 homes and one small guest home was destroyed. Numerous large trees in the path were snapped or uprooted.

Outside of those tornadoes, straight line wind gusts reached 90 to 100 mph in some places and Graham says approximately 20 homes were damaged in county.

A survey team was also scheduled to be in Todd County Saturday, but results from that damage assessment were not yet available. A home on Chester Stahl Road in the Trenton area sustained significant damage and a tree fell on a home in the Green Acres Subdivision in Guthrie.

Marshall County Judge-Executive Kevin Neal declared a state of emergency due to damage there, including at Kentucky Dam Marina, which is closed to all traffic.

Crews from Pennyrile Electric spent all of Friday night, Saturday and Saturday night trying to restore power to all of its members.

Another line of severe thunderstorms hit southeastern Christian and Todd County Saturday afternoon and the National Weather Service notes the siding was ripped off the back of a home in Oak Grove.

No one was injured locally by any of the storms.
