Man with long history of theft arrests back in jail

A man with a long history of arrests for stealing items out of vehicles is back in jail again.

Hopkinsville police arrested 48-year old Billy Lee Sanders of Hopkinsville on Cypress Street Tuesday morning and served him with warrants for theft by unlawful taking from a vehicle and for criminal trespassing.

Sanders was captured on video by a witness entering parked cars on June 3 and he allegedly stole a piggy bank belonging to a child out of one vehicle. The top to that bank was located near the last place the witness to the crime saw Sanders.

The warrant for criminal trespass alleges Sanders was captured on video surveillance as he approached the garage of an elderly woman while on foot at about 11:30 p.m. on May 20. The woman does not know Sanders and had never given him permission to be on her property.

Jail records show Sanders has been arrested a total of 19 times in the last 10 years and 7 of those arrests included charges directly related to theft. His entire criminal history extends back into the 1990’s and includes many more arrests.

He’s lodged in the Christian County Jail on a $2,000 bond.
