Jeffers Bend hosts open house, dedicates botanical garden

Jeffers Bend Environmental Center hosted an open house and dedicated its new botanical garden Saturday evening.

HWEA General Manager Derek Watson provided musical entertainment near the end of an hour-long program where volunteers at Jeffers Bend described programs throughout the year and fundraisers that support the facility.

The botanical garden was made possible by a $25,000 grant and David Chiles says it’s about educating people about plants that are native to Kentucky.

He says local master gardeners are also tending the University of Kentucky trial garden to test viability of certain plants in the region.

Chiles hopes many locals will go to Jeffers Bend and see the garden and other offerings on the grounds.

Jeffers Bend is still offering memorial bricks in the facility’s new patio, where one can give $100 or more and honor or memorialize someone by having their name permanently inscribed.
