Area counties participating in earthquake exercise

Christian was one of many western Kentucky counties participating in an earthquake preparedness exercise this week.

A series of earthquakes associated with the New Madrid Fault devastated the region in 1811 and 1812 and it’s possible it could happen again in the future.

Christian County Emergency Management Director Randy Graham says 24 counties in the region have been going over their plans for a major earthquake this week.

There are often watches and warnings well in advance of disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes, but Graham notes there are no such warnings for earthquakes.

It’s important for families living in western Kentucky to have a kit that will allow them to make it three days without assistance if a major earthquake were to hit.

During an earthquake, officials say drop to the ground; take cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and hold on until the shaking stops.
