Gov. defends veto, says new bill necessary to save quasi-governmental agencies

Governor Matt Bevin remains committed to calling a special session to give relief to quasi-governmental agencies facing significant increases to their pension obligations in July, but says he won’t be at the forefront of lobbying legislators to support his bill.

Speaking to WHOP News, Governor Bevin didn’t give a timetable for a special session and said it will ultimately be up to the General Assembly and its leadership to pass a bill saving those agencies such as health departments and Sanctuary, Inc. from devastating cuts.

He says the job has to get done before July 1.

Governor Bevin defends his decision to veto the bill that was passed by lawmakers during the regular session, calling parts of it flawed and illegal.

He says overall pension reform will still have to happen and could come up again during the 2020 budget session.
