Big Jeff the fish returns for Take Kids Fishing Day Saturday

The pond and Little River are now teeming with fish to catch at Jeffers’ Bend Environmental Center and Big Jeff has made a return just in time for Take Kids Fishing Day on Saturday.

Around 600 pounds of fish were released into the water ways on Thursday, so there will be plenty for everyone to catch on Saturday. Charles Turner of Jeffers’ Bend says this is the 20th Take Kids Fishing Day and this year not only will Big Jeff—an oversized catfish—be up for grabs, but one fish has been tagged and whoever catches it wins $100.

Mitchell Fort, a fishing champion who will be competing in a national championship in Washington D.C. in June, says the event allows kids who may not usually get to fish a chance to do so.

Families can come fish from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the center on Metcalfe Lane in Hopkinsville on Saturday. There will also be awards given to the winners of the casting and reeling competitions—the winner gets a new bicycle—and competitions for the biggest and smallest catches of the day will also take place.

It’s $3 per person to register to fish on the morning of the event. For more information, or to pre-register, contact Jeffers’ Bend at 270-885-5600.
