Man indicted in damaging of local post office

A Christian County Grand Jury returned indictments for first-degree burglary and second-degree assault Friday.

Indicted on charges of first-degree burglary and criminal mischief is 56-year old Mark Wayne Cunningham of Morganfield. Cunningham is alleged to have broken into the Hopkinsville Post Office on January 21 and caused damage to property.  Officers reportedly made contact with Cunningham that night while responding to the scene and he was dragging two postal bags at the Little River Motel and he allegedly said he broke in and destroyed the post office because “it had to be done.”

An arrest citation says the door to the employees’ area of the building had been kicked in and items were knocked over in the service area. The employees’ area was ransacked and destroyed, with electronics all over the floor—and mail and documents were thrown and ripped up. Cunningham allegedly ripped alarms and lights from the walls and destroyed computers.

Indicted for second-degree assault is 40-year old Joseph Abron, who allegedly stabbed another man in March on North Kentucky Avenue during an altercation. The victim was taken to Jennie Stuart Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.
