Two arrested in Crofton following shoplifting, pursuit

Two people are facing multiple criminal charges following a shoplifting complaint in Crofton on Friday that ended in a brief pursuit that injured a Christian County Sheriff’s Sergeant.

According to the Christian County Sherriff’s Department report, deputies were dispatched to the Dollar General in Crofton for reports of a shoplifter. Deputies were reportedly told that 38-year old Karen Crafton of Nortonville was actively inside the store and concealing merchandise in her purse, while 50-year old Timothy King of Crofton was outside digging in a dumpster.

Sgt. Jeff Goulet made contact with King—who had two active warrants for his arrest—and King allegedly fled when ordered to put his hands on the cruiser. A brief pursuit began, with King allegedly ignoring commands to stop, and Sgt. Goulet was able to catch him and took him to the ground.  An unnamed citizen help Sgt. Goulet restrain King until he was able to get handcuffs on him.  Sgt. Goulet reportedly sustained injuries to his knee, elbow and hip—he was treated and released from Jennie Stuart Medical Center.

King is charged with fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, third-degree assault of an officer and possession of methamphetamine.

Crafton was taken into custody, with the allegedly shoplifted merchandise discovered in her purse during a search, along with multiple items of drug paraphernalia including pills, synthetic marijuana and suspected meth.

She is charged with theft by unlawful taking, possession of synthetic drugs, possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.
