A local police officer is warning of a scam where someone is using his name while attempting to obtain credit card information over the phone.
Dawson Springs Police Officer Scott Raup, who formerly worked in Hopkinsville and Cadiz, says he recently became aware that someone was making phone calls using his name and they were claiming to be raising money for the local Shop with a Cop program.
The scam angers Raup, as he knows the Fraternal Order of Police Shop With a Cop program does a lot of good for families in need at Christmas and it’s frustrating to hear of someone trying to take advantage of the community’s generosity.
Officer Raup says if you receive a phone call from any charity and you are the least bit unsure of who you are speaking with, hang up the phone and take steps to verify you are donating to a legitimate cause.
You can report any suspicious solicitation phone calls to your local law enforcement agency.
